October 5 – November 29, 2024
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 5, 6 – 8 pm

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present Fine Art Meets Fashion, an exhibition that introduces Tavia Atelier and their artist collaborations. Featured artists include Scott Andresen, Alex Beard, Dan Charbonnet, Ryoko Endo, Kristina Larson, and Marina Savashynskaya Dunbar.

Artists Scott Andresen’s mixed media works consist of veils of silk scrim and stitched patterns of metallic thread onto canvas. He focuses on the art of repair as each piece goes through separate phases of construction, destruction, and reparation.

Alex Beard creates elaborate wildlife compositions in his signature style of gestural painting, which he has coined “Abstract Naturalism.” He has traveled extensively around the world and the diverse cultures, colors, and climates have profoundly influenced his work.

Dan Charbonnet is known for his process-based artworks. For this exhibition, Charbonnet took his signature approach but replaced his painted stripes with sewn strips of recycled fashion. He sourced designer brand clothes from thrift stores, seeking out subtle textures and values of green, then cut the high fashion fabrics into thin strips and sewed them to wider strips of torn canvas with a deep yellow thread used for fabricating jeans (once emblematic of the labor class) for a hint of rebellion.

Ryoko Endo initially learned traditional Sumi ink calligraphy, then later developed a more fluid method of brushwork by increasing the force within the movement. This resulted in energetic abstract paintings with an intensity of color.

Kristina Larson draws inspiration from nature and hand sculpts botanicals out of various clay bodies. Some of the works are realized in the form of ceramic bouquets or wall installations, while others are cast into brass and silver, as seen in her Art to Wear jewelry collection.

Marina Savashynskaya Dunbar combines paint that has a transparent, ethereal quality with sand which feels tangible and carries a greater density. The mixed media paintings evoke impressions of dunes, flora, and natural phenomena while departing from a faithful rendering of reality.
