Press Release

CHARLY PALMER, a painter of the contemporary black experience who has exhibited at STELLA JONES GALLERY for thirteen years, brings James Baldwin’s 1979 novel, Just Above My Head to life by tackling social justice issues. “I seek to paint the way James Baldwin makes me feel: Proud, black, beautiful, and empowered. My paintings inform the way Baldwin’s writing informs. The recurring theme of flowers represents beauty, joy, and hope but at the same time, a reminder of the cycle of life and death.”

PALMER’S work has been placed in private and public collections, including Atlanta Life Insurance, McDonald’s Corporation, Miller Brewing Company, Coca Cola Company and Vanderbilt University. One of Palmers painting’s was auctioned in 2015 as part of “THE ART COLLECTION OF MAYA ANGELOU” by Swann Auction Galleries. Palmer’s work was commissioned for the 1996 Olympics and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 2016, he was commissioned to create original artwork commemorating Fisk University’s 150th year anniversary; in 2017, he accomplished the same for Howard University. PALMER recently completed a project with the Green Bay Packers featuring portraits of players for the Lambeau Stadium.
