Press Release

Gallery 600 Julia is pleased to announce Coffee & Cocktails, an exhibition featuring the work of Anne Michael Pappas.

In her paintings, often executed en plein air, Anne Pappas seeks to communicate an atmosphere reflective of time and place. By painting outdoors, she directly observes the interplay between light and shadow and attempts to capture those fleeting moments in her compositions. New Orleans architecture, with its unique variety and character, is a continuing source of inspiration. The richly colored structures along with their decorative detail offer formal variations that act as perfect foils for the study of light and shadow.

In her show “Coffee and Cocktails” Anne uses light to not only define form but also to depict the vernacular of New Orleans. Here bars and coffee shops, sometimes found within the same establishment, are glimpses into daily life. Whether it be early morning glancing light or the fading light of dusk enhanced by electrical illumination, she seeks to document the visual effects of light. In her paintings, light and shadow mark time, offering an evocative window into life in the Crescent City.
